Celebrating Glendale’s Centennial
2010 Historic Preservation Bus Tours
Glendale residents, members of Boards and Commissions and Glendale City Council, and other visitors toured down “history lane” on one of three Glendale Centennial Historic Preservation Bus Tours, conducted on Saturday, May 22. Participants selected one of the following tours:
- Historic Homes and Districts (pdf) – consisting of walking tours of three historic homes and armchair tours aboard the bus of three historic districts.
- Historic Gems Tour (pdf) – consisting of walking tours of individual buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places and an armchair tour of the Glendale Woman’s Club.
- Historic Landmarks Tour (pdf) – consisting of walking tours of Manistee Ranch and Sahuaro Ranch.
Glendale currently has five historic districts listed on the National Register: Catlin Court, Floralcroft, 59th Avenue, Myrtle, and Glendale Tract Historic Districts. Two additional districts are anticipated to be added to the National Register within the next few weeks: Thunderbird Estates/McDonald Addition and Northfield Historic Districts. The Sands Estates Historic District is in the nomination process and nomination to the National Register is anticipated by the end of this year of 2010. The historic districts are shown on the City of Glendale Historic Districts Map (pdf) . Additionally, a number of buildings and sites within the City of Glendale are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places (pdf) .
Glendale’s Historic Preservation program is one of the more robust in the region and state, and is consistent with laws and policies at the federal and state levels. The city, at this writing, has a total of five historic districts with an anticipation of eight historic districts by the end of the year 2010, eleven individual buildings, two historic sites, and nearly three-hundred Contributing Properties listed on the National Register.
Glendale’s Historic Preservation Program is based on creating awareness and support within the community; designating, restoring, and maintaining historic properties; and enhancing the knowledge of city staff and members of the Historic Preservation Commission in matters of historic preservation. The Annual Historic Preservation Bus Tour provides a hands-on opportunity for members of the community to learn about their historic heritage and appreciate the community’s historic roots and resources.
