Glendale Avenue Road Improvement Project Begins

Glendale Avenue from 51st to 66th avenues will be improved with new rubberized asphalt this summer

As part of the city’s pavement management program, Glendale Avenue from 51st to 66th avenues will be improved with new rubberized asphalt this summer. The process uses recycled tires and is expected to extend the life of the roadway, reducing maintenance costs and decreasing traffic noise.

Construction is scheduled to begin in late June and end by early September. Much of the construction work will take place at night and message boards will be in place to alert drivers to traffic restrictions.

This street upgrades are funded through federal stimulus funds as part of the American Reinvestment & Recovery Act (ARRA), and this project is a partnership with the Arizona Department of Transportation.

During construction, the public is encouraged to follow all traffic signage and instructions from public safety officers directing traffic.

Schedule Update:

Glendale Avenue Rubberized Asphalt Overlay Project Update

Rubberized asphalt overlay is currently taking place on Glendale Avenue.  This project is being funded with American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA), or federal stimulus, funds and Nesbitt Contracting has been selected as the contractor for this work.  The following tentative scheduling information is provided regarding the project.  Since this project is in front of Glendale City Hall and near Glendale Police Department facilities, please feel free to share this information with your colleagues.  If you have questions, comments or concerns related to the project, please don’t hesitate to contact Teresa Makinen directly (Cell:  602.421.3069) or the project hotline.  Thank you for your patience during this work!

51st Avenue to 55th Avenue:

Mill and overlay work is completed from 51st Avenue to 55th Avenue. Contractor crews will still need to raise utilities in this area to make them flush with the new road surface.

55th Avenue to 57th Drive:

Tentatively scheduled to begin August 16th through approximately August 20th, between 55th Avenue and 57th Drive, the contractor will remove asphalt, apply a first layer of asphalt, and a top layer of rubberized asphalt to this segment.

This portion of the project area provides a very limited work area for the contractor to conduct the work; therefore, traffic control will require three lanes to be restricted during this process, with only one travel lane available, in one direction only, as the contractor completes this process.

The contractor will work in westbound lanes first, for approximately two days; and then eastbound lanes for approximately two days. While the contractor works on westbound lanes, one lane of eastbound travel will be permitted through the downtown area with westbound travel detoured to Glenn Drive. While the contractor works on eastbound lanes, one lane of westbound travel will be permitted through the downtown area with eastbound travel detoured to Lamar Drive. Message boards will be in place during this work to notify travelers of detours.

57th Drive to 59th Avenue:

Work to mill (remove asphalt) and overlay Glendale Avenue from 57th Drive to 59th Avenue is scheduled to take place during the weekend of August 20-22. During this time, Glendale Avenue will be CLOSED from 57th Drive to 59th Avenue. Both 57th Drive and 59th Avenue traffic will continue to allow north and southbound traffic but will not be permitted to turn into the closure area. Glendale traffic will be routed at 59th Avenue for eastbound, and at 57th Drive for westbound, north to Glenn Drive to detour the mill and overlay area.

Once the mill and overlay process is complete, as part of this project at several crosswalk locations in the project area, the contractor will need to remove and replace crosswalk “headers” which have been damaged. Crosswalk “headers” are the concrete bands on either side of the brick pavers to keep the brick pavers in place.

When the mill and overlay process, and temporary striping is complete from 51st to 59th avenues, the contractor will then raise the utilities to make them flush with the new roadway. Approximately 1-2 months after completion, crews will apply permanent striping to the roadway.

We appreciate your patience during this work. For project comments/questions, contact our project hotline at 1-877-203-0042
