Jazz and Blues Festival Will Include Interactive Art Component
The 27th annual Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival in Historic Downtown Glendale April 17-18 will not only bring musical artists, but opportunities for guests to participate in the visual arts as well.
The Glendale Arts Commission is taking part in the festival by bringing a diverse selection of artists to add an artistic element to the event. The art will range from interactive voice-changing music to improvisational poetry to an incarnation of the music on paper. There will be three artists with four interactive projects, allowing event attendees to participate in art related activities while enjoying the tunes of the jazz and blues performers. The artists include Stephen Fairfield, Mary Lucking and Kristine Kollasch.
Stephen Fairfield’s work is entitled, “Celebrating Thelonious Monk” and will have three components - visual, auditory and educational. Participants can assist the artist in the completion of a three-dimensional portrait sculpture of Thelonious Monk.
Mary Lucking’s work will allow the public to interact with "Blue Birds" by walking up to two bird masks placed on microphone stands. The participant’s voices will be picked up by the microphones mounted inside the masks and digitally modified to emit birdcalls which will be played out of hidden speakers in the platform, thus taking on the identity of a pair of twittering bluebirds.
Kristine Kollasch will have two projects, the first entitled “Centennial Ball,” in which the public can create handmade tiles to decorate a concrete ball located at Murphy Park. The project will be a centennial time capsule documenting who was here 100 years after the city was founded. The ball will become a permanent sculpture celebrating the people and history of Glendale. The “Recycled Sax” project will allow the public to interact with recycled saxophones by enjoying a visually dynamic relief sculpture of a large saxophone constructed of recycled materials gathered from Glendale's recycling facility along with other new and used materials.
