Free 101 Training for Home Remodelers to Learn about Building Permits and Rebates

Homeowners will learn how to save money on home improvement projects by taking advantage of available rebates and following the do’s and don’ts of the permit process in an upcoming free permit 101 class being offered by the city of Glendale.

To help raise awareness on the permit process and educate on how to go green while remodeling, experts from Glendale’s Building Safety Department will teach residents everything they need to know about getting construction permits, why they’re necessary and the possible costs associated with various home improvement projects.

Participants will learn everything from minor remodels to room additions and solar-powered systems. A part of the class will educate homeowners on where they can find the best rebates and incentives for everything from energy efficient appliances and windows to solar panels.

Homeowner projects are very attractive and much more affordable with the many rebates and incentives available. According to the Department of Energy, about 80 percent of homes built prior to 1980 have insufficient insulation and typically 43 percent of the utility bill goes toward heating and cooling a home. Some simple changes on the weather stripping or adding new energy efficient windows, duct sealing and insulation can save a homeowner 28 percent on their utility bills. For example, if the average bill is $200, there is a $56 per month savings.

Another popular improvement area that will be covered in the class is the conversion to solar systems from traditional electric. Interest in solar permits has been soaring in the last few years as homeowners recognize the renewable energy benefits. The solar permit rise is also a testament to the commitment of Glendale residents practicing green living.

“We are seeing a lot more interest in green remodeling,” said Adam Venetis, Building Safety Plans Examiner. “Our number one priority is ensuring that the work done meets important safety standards. This class is designed to answer the most common questions and help homeowners walk through the process, whether it is explaining how to get a permit or sharing sample design plans.”

The class is Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Glendale City Hall, second floor, room 2C, 5850 W. Glendale Ave. There is no cost and parking is available in the adjacent garage. To reserve a spot in the class, call 623.930.2800 or email rhuggins@glendaleaz.com.
