University Of Phoenix Sponsors Glendale’s Educational Outreach To Residents

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Glendale’s program to provide residents with civic education will benefit by a $5,000 donation from University of Phoenix for fiscal year 2008-09. The money will be used to conduct additional courses as part of the Glendale University (GU) program.

Over the last 11 years, the city has hosted a ten-week civic education class, GU 101, which introduces attendees to all facets of local government. This course is sponsored by a donation from Cox Communications. Approximately 700 residents are graduates of the GU program and are eligible to participate in more specialized classes, known as GU Graduate classes.

The GU Graduate classes vary from year to year, but recent topics have included arts and culture, homeland security and personal safety. University of Phoenix’s donation will allow the city to expand the number of Graduate classes and also to begin an alumni program.

“For more than 30 years, University of Phoenix has helped students balance education and life in a rapidly changing world to help them achieve their dream of getting a college degree,” said Craig Bartholomew, Phoenix campus director for University of Phoenix. “We are pleased that our commitment to changing people’s lives supports Glendale’s educational outreach efforts and ultimately empowers its residents to improve their employer organizations through leadership and service to their communities.”
